Safe_Snacks

Safe Snacks Miss Yan’s student allergies

(Corn, corn syrup, corn meal, corn starch (less than 2% is okay), popcorn, oats, rice, chicken and whole milk)

Here are some creative and healthy snack ideas for class snack donations:

Fruits/Berries

Blueberries

  • Fresh or frozen
  • “Just Blueberries” – Dried berries – Find in Natural Foods section of Carrs and Fred Meyer

Strawberries

  • Fresh or frozen
  • “Just Strawberries” – Dried berries

Bananas

  • Fresh slices (soak in lemon juice for 20 seconds to keep them from turning brown)
  • Banana chips (many varieties)
  • “Just Strawberries and Bananas” – Dried berry mix in Natural Foods section of Carrs and Fred Meyer
  • “Crisps” – Brothers All Natural Freeze Dried Bananas/Strawberries Mix – Find at Costco in a combo box with Fuji Apple Crisps

Apples

  • Fresh slices (see condiments for variety of toppers/dips)
  • Fuji Apple Crisps – Freeze dried apples

Watermelon

- Chunks or slices

Mandarin Oranges – Big bag of “little cuties” easy to peel and sweet oranges – Fred Meyer $4.99

- Canned mandarin oranges packed in water (beware of any canned fruit packed in syrup – it is usually corn syrup).

Seedless Grapes

– Purple or green

Kiwi

  • Kids love the bright green color and sweet tart taste

  • Danimals Smoothie bottles – all grocery stores (they do have 2% modified corn starch, but are okay)

Pudding

  • Kozy Shack Bananas Foster Pudding – Carrs and Fred Meyer pudding section
  • Handi Snacks – chocolate (just basic chocolate) – Carrs, Fred Meyer, Wal-Mart and Costco (chocolate is the only flavor without corn)

Breads

French Bread Baguette – Fresh baked bread section in Carrs and Fred Meyer

“Tia Rosa” Flour Tortillas and “Taco Loco” whole wheat flour tortillas

Pillsbury Crescent Rolls (not the reduced fat – just regular)

Krusteaz Basic Muffin Mix (just add water) – Find at Costco. Add fresh

strawberries, bananas or blueberries for healthy variety.

Panetini Oven Baked Italian Toast – Find bags in deli section of Fred Meyer

Thomas Original English Muffins – This is the ONLY flavor and brand we can

find that doesn’t have corn syrup.

Fresh Baked Croissants – Carrs and F.M. Bakery section (double check labels – the wheat croissants have corn syrup)

RollsOroweat whole grain 100% whole wheat dinner rolls – the package says “no high fructose corn syrup” – all grocery stores

Basic sliced Bread – Sara Lee 100% Whole wheat with honey, Franz Milk and Honey, Franz 100% whole wheat with pockets of honey, Cinnabon cinnamon sliced bread

Krusteaz Mini Pancakes – in the frozen section – microwave ready

please double check label before purchasing)

Creative Snack Ideas (using above ingredients)

Cucumber Slices and carrots with sweet poppy seed dip or ranch dressing

Fresh French Bread Baguette slices – with cheese or olive oil/balsamic vinegar mixture (give kids a spout on small bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Let them pour the oil first and then add a drop of balsamic vinegar on top. Mix it up with a spoon (it swirls and makes neat designs) and dip! Cucumbers are also a hit with this mixture

English Muffin half with flavored cream cheese spread

Apple slices and celery sticks dipped in peanut butter

Banana Chips – dip in apple butter or strawberry cream cheese

Tri-color pasta salad with some colorful raw veggies

Tortilla log rolls with sliced meat and cheese

Cracker stackers

Fruit Pizza – Basic sugar cookie mix (most are allergy-friendly), roll and cook in a round pan, strawberry cream cheese spread and top with variety of fresh fruit, cut in pizza slices – yummy and fun!

***Always double check labels. Surprisingly not all of the brand name foods are made in the same factories with the same ingredients. There are a few items that have corn syrup/starch in them sometimes – and other times they don’t***
