Star of the Week

Dear Parents,
Every student will have the opportunity to be Star Student of the Week!  Each day we will have something special for our Star Student.  On Friday, your child will bring home a blue backpack that has a Teddy Bear, a journal, estimation jar, and poster inside.  Please return the backpack, estimation jar, and Teddy Bear by Monday.  Other contents may be turned in the day of the activity will be presented.

Monday – Estimation Jar
One of the goals of the Kindergarten curriculum is to provide an opportunity for children to estimate.  The best way to improve this skill is through practice. The “Estimation Jar” gives children practice in making and checking predictions while learning the concept of place value.  Please help him/her choose a number of small items that will fit in the Jar.  Have your child count exactly how many items are in it.  Please no more than 100 items.  When it is your child’s week, you will receive a form to record the number on the sheet and return it with the jar. Encourage your child to keep it a secret.  At school, the children in the class will try to estimate the actual number of items in the jar.  Then the actual number will be revealed. We will compare the guesses to the actual number. Next, we will count and group by ten to gain an understanding of place value.  Some suggestions are: marbles, dice, M&Ms, cotton balls, seashells, Skittles, popcorn kernels, macaroni, etc.  The “Estimation Jar” is a chance for children to estimate, compare, count, and enjoy the world of numbers.

Tuesday – Journal
With your help, you and your child will work together to write and/or illustrate something your child did with the Teddy Bear during the weekend.  Feel free to include pictures.  This is an activity that connects what kids are learning at school and extending that to their home.  On Tuesday, your child will share their journal entry with the class.

Wednesday - Show and Tell
Your child may bring in two nonbreakable items for Show and Tell!  These items must be taken home the same day.  Please do not bring toy weapons to school.

Thursday – Letter from Parent
Parents will write a letter to the class telling us how special your child is to you.  Send the letter in a sealed envelope to school with your child, and I will read the letter to the class during the day.  The content of the letter is up to you, but you may want to choose from the following ideas: Describe special or funny stories about your child for the class to hear, write a silly or serious poem about your child, tell us some neat things we may not know about your child, or write about why you are proud of your child.  Parents are also encouraged to join their child for lunch today!  We have lunch from 12:45-1:05pm (2018-2019 K Class).

Friday – All About Me Poster
Your child will be given a poster no later than Friday before your child is Star Student to use to display their photos and/or illustrations and information they would like to share with the class.  You may choose to use your own poster board or the one that is included in the backpack.  Also on this day, the class will write about the Star Student.
